Weber State University’s Technical Theatre/Design Concentration
Technical Theatre is a discipline of theatre that encompasses the design and construction of set pieces, props, scenery, lighting, and sound. These elements are necessary to the success of a performance. Some of the most notable technical elements are lighting, sound, and rigging systems. However, technical elements are often hidden from view.
A technical theatre concentration focuses on the practical side of theatre, but also trains students to be creative and collaborative. Students will learn about the history of theatre and its technological advances. In addition to learning the basics of stage management, students will take a lead role in the production of their own plays. This allows students to gain a hands-on experience with different stages.
The Technical Theatre/Design program at Weber State offers a rigorous course of study that prepares graduates for a variety of careers in the theatre industry. Graduates have earned jobs on the set of film and television productions, as well as performing in theatres and production shops across the country. Tech Theatre, as part of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in theatre, provides students with an understanding of how to use technology to create a theatrical performance. Students will learn about the various tools available, including computers, CAD, and rigging systems. They will learn about the safety and programming of these systems, as well as how to operate them.
Students can choose to focus on stage design and lighting. For these courses, they will learn about the proper use of lighting techniques, the importance of visual effects, and the use of CAD. Other courses include script analysis and scenic design.
Students in the SM&W Technical Theatre concentration have an opportunity to work with a consultant who has a background in technical theatre. These consultants are a valuable resource and can help students develop their portfolios.
Students in the Technical Theatre/Design program may be eligible to receive the NETworks Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to select students and gives priority to underrepresented groups.
