Types of Attic Insulation

Spray foam insulation is an important upgrade for your home. It prevents hot air from escaping in the winter and keeps cool air in during the summer, helping reduce energy bills and ensuring a more comfortable living environment. It also protects your roof and reduces pests and moisture damage.

Not all insulation is created equal, and the type of attic insulation you choose depends on your budget, climate, and specific needs. There are four main types of attic insulation:

Blanket Insulation (Batts and Rolls)

Blanket insulation is available in pre-cut panels that are ideal for DIY projects. It’s typically made from fiberglass, which is a good choice for most homes in Michigan. This type of insulation is also inexpensive and easy to install.

Loose-Fill (Blown-In)

Loose-fill insulation is made from recycled paper material that’s treated to resist fire and pests. It’s eco-friendly, affordable, and very effective. It’s best installed by a professional, though, as the installation process is messy and requires the use of a blowing machine.

Rigid Foam Insulation

Rigid foam insulation is a polystyrene, polyisocyanurate, or polyurethane product that comes in panels that can be cut to size and fitted to attic structural elements. It has a high R-value per inch and is resistant to compression. It’s most common in commercial applications, but it can be used in residential attics too. It emits gases during and after installation, requiring adequate ventilation, and it can be difficult to remove or replace.
