How to Properly Install an Eavestrough

A house’s eavestroughs (or gutters) are a necessity for keeping your basement, roof, foundation, and garden protected from water damage. Without a proper eavestrough system, the water from rain or melted snow would fall directly off your roof, resulting in splatters all over the walls and house and oversaturating the soil. This can lead to costly repairs and maintenance. Eavestroughs, on the other hand, effectively drain away this excess water and direct it to downspouts where it can then be absorbed by the ground.

The cost of eavestrough installation will vary depending on the size and design of your home, and whether or not you opt for extras like screens and other add-ons. Other factors include the pitch of your roof, and the number of storeys your house has, since each additional storey increases the amount of material needed for the project.

During an eavestrough installation, it is crucial to ensure that the slope of the gutter is correct. To do this, start by measuring 3/4″ below the shingle at one end where the downpipe will be installed and mark it with a chalk line. Then, at the other end where the downpipe will be located, measure and mark 1/4″ lower than the first marks. This will give your eavestrough the necessary slope for effective drainage.

Also, be sure to properly inspect the fascia boards before installing the eavestrough. If the fascia boards are damaged, rotten or otherwise compromised in any way, you’ll need to replace them before attempting an eavestrough installation.
