Since 2022, however, a wave of storefront shops has opened across the country. One Toronto-area business, called Fun Guyz, is growing so quickly that it plans to double its number of stores this year.

It’s unclear whether law enforcement will do anything about the mushroom shops popping up in cities and towns around the country. Some lawyers say police have discretion over what they pursue and may have more pressing issues than going after a store that sells mushrooms.

But some people worry that the mushroom shops are encouraging more people to access a dangerous, unregulated drug. “If the mushroom market grows to a point where it becomes dangerous and unregulated, there’s no reason why we wouldn’t have a serious crisis in society,” says Norman Farb, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
