Pennsylvania Apostille Service
The Pennsylvania apostille service verifies that a signature on a document is authentic. It is recognized in 117 countries that are part of the Hague treaty and is often needed to make legal documents valid for use abroad. Documents requiring apostille include marriage certificates, birth certificates, diplomas and more.
The Process
Documents requiring apostille in Pennsylvania must be original or certified copies that have been notarized by a notary public in the state of Pennsylvania. The notary must be a currently commissioned notary and the document must meet certain requirements for it to be eligible for apostille services. The apostille is then issued by the Secretary of State’s office.
Photocopies are not acceptable for apostille certification, so it is important to only submit the original certified or notarized document. In addition, the notarization must be done in English and there are specific wording requirements that must appear on the notarial certificate. If these requirements are not followed, the apostille will be rejected.
There are two ways to apply for a Pennsylvania apostille, either in person or by mail. If you are able to visit the department of state in Harrisburg, you will need to bring your original certified or notarized document and complete an apostille request form. You will also need to provide payment for the apostille service.
If you are unable to visit the Department of State, you can mail your documents with a completed apostille request form and payment to the address listed on the form. It is important to include a self-addressed, prepaid return envelope or UPS air bill to ensure that your document is returned to you.
